Apples and Alpacas, Anyone?

Old Mill Alpacas is a lovely farm and apple orchard with over 80 alpacas. This is the perfect place to take a break, get some sunshine and let the kids get out and run.

What to expect:

  • Shopping: Find natural hypoallergenic wool products and clothing in the farm store.
  • Meet the Alpacas: Book a tour to feed and interact with the alpacas and visit the farm.
  • Caution: Wear appropriate clothing for a working farm and expect to wash your shoes.

 

All About Alpacas

Old Mill Alpacas is a farm dedicated the gentle alpaca and their luxurious wool. Although it began with only a handful of animals, they now boast over 80 alpacas, including some champion alpacas.  The owner and staff are thrilled to introduce visitors to the animals and explain how the farm and mill work. All their products are eco-friendly and animal-friendly. Old Mill Alpacas farm also offers various educational events about alpacas and processing their wool, as well as attending local craft shows.

Alpacas are very calm and docile animals. This makes interacting with them a great experience, even for small children. In addition, these friendly animals have a high quality fleece which is less itchy than sheep wool and hypoallergenic. Alpaca wool products are an excellent choice for those with sensitive skin.

Set in the rolling countryside, with green fields, an apple orchard and a creek, Old Mill Alpacas farm is idyllic. Visitors rave about the beautiful location and the adorable alpacas! Animal lovers and families with children will especially enjoy their tour of the farm.

Old Mill Alpacas offers three different tours. Since they are between 30 min to an hour, they are perfect to break up a long drive.  They range in price from $10 to $45 per person, with children under 6 entering free. One of the tours (Boys Tour) is geared towards seniors and small children. All the tours include learning about alpacas and feeding them treats. The longer tours allow for more time outside with the animals. If you plan a break at Old Mill Alpacas remember to wear the right clothes and footwear for walking around the farm. Tours must be booked ahead of time. This can be done online from their website. Anyone can stop in and peruse the farm shop for free. They are open between 11 AM and 4 PM.

Colborne

Colborne is a charming small town located along the scenic shores of Lake Ontario. Known as the “Apple Capital of Ontario,” Colborne is home to the famous Big Apple, a giant roadside attraction where visitors can enjoy fresh-baked apple pies, cider, and family-friendly activities like mini-golf and a petting zoo. The Big Apple also offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside from its observation deck.

For history enthusiasts, Colborne has several heritage buildings and sites to explore, including the Colborne Art Gallery, housed in a historic building that showcases works by local and regional artists. The downtown area features quaint shops and cafes.
